What advice would you give to a woman working in an all male team?

If you have been the only woman in an all male engineering team were more women hired in to your team after you joined?

How would you encourage your company to hire more women in engineering?

Would you consider leaving your company if the company doesn’t hire more women into the team than just you?

We had a recent vacancy, after speaking to management, we contacted the local university WOMEN IN ENGINEERING group. They were happy to spread the word to their group.

I have also joined a suppliers “Lean In Circle”, we are supporting each other and brainstorming on ways to encourage Women in to engineering roles, and to develop and support the women engineers we already have.

My advice be bold, and speak confidently. Toastmasters is a great organisation where you can build your speaking skills . Believe in yourself.

I would first of all say show up! Sometimes you feel you don’t belong there but remember to show up and do your work diligently and confidently. Never shy away from asking questions and assistance from your colleagues if need be. It gets better with time.

There have been two more female engineers aside from me after 4 years and I believe that my being there has paved the way for more females because I have shown we can execute tasks very well when given the opportunity and I also believe more females will be employed soon!
