What is your companies’ policy on EV vans and cars for field service engineers?

Is it viable to use only EVs for a Field Service Engineering team in the UK?

Hi Tim, hardly surprising I would reply to this I guess lol.
But I have my Field Team on EV Cars and it works fine for us, we did try Vans to start with but the range has still not been quite where it needs to be just yet, but with the Infrastruture going in the ground it will make this easier, as the working day does get affected if in the Van.
As for the cars they are easily making the days work possible, and again the infrastrure for on the go charging is growing day by day, so for me and my team it is working for us.

Hi Steve, thanks for that reply. What is the typical range your field engineering team is travelling per day?

I also read a lot about how expensive it is to insure EVs. Does having a fleet make this less of a burden?

Hi Tim the range the team gets is 220 miles plus if weather warmer of course as that does help, plus the Engineers then repair the chargers as they arrive so no issue then charging to head back home again.

From an overall costs to Insure these I gernalyl do not see as part of a management fee we pay when leasing these vehicles, so cannot fully reply to that point here.

Thanks for the further info Steve.

I hope we get some other replies from different locations and climates.

We currently have no specific policy governing the use of EVs by FSEs. However, we do have guidelines regarding cargo capacity which is quite important for the safe carriage of tools and parts, no matter the type of vehicle.

The use of EVs in Field Service is dependent on a number of factors like infrastructure etc but most importantly the individual needs of the FSE. We’ve got a relatively small team in the UK. As such, our FSEs cover large territories so the majority of my colleagues have chosen PHEVs. I, however have the smallest territory, covering South Central so I’ve opted for the Skoda Enyaq iV 80. It’s got a decent size boot and the range is suitable for my needs. I have a charger at home. I do occasionally make longer journeys when I need to utilise public chargers but I try to limit this to reduce cost.
