What tips would you give to someone designing new biomedical equipment?

Easy access to key components. Working in the military and now being a former FSE, I feel like instruments are built to never be taken apart (which is good because it should be robust). But in the real world, FSEs and engineers have to go back inside of the equipment.

Designing products that are easier to take apart (especially touchy components) would aid everyone in the life cycle of the instrument.

Try to use same size of screw head as much as possible. If not, at least use same type (allen, torx, pozi). Don’t use flat heads!!

If there’s the choice for a nut or a screw to remove a part, always use a screw.

We’re in XXI century and every system has a microcontroller/computer on it. Please, log everything, make these logs easily available for user to save and send to FSE. Or better, deploy a remote support system, with access to logs and diagnostic tools. You will save a lot of money in long term.

(My current company is already implementing these improvements, and we’re getting happier over the time).

Thanks for this Luis. Are there any manufacturers that you have experienced that are particularly prone to using too many different types of screws / connecting methods?

Used to be in old devices. I can’t blame a single manufacturer.

Precision. The number one requirement of a mechanism is usually precision and accuracy, regardless of whether it is related to the safety or efficacy of the device. …

The main advice for the manufacturer is not to save on the quality of spare parts materials, especially on the body parts of mobile products. Designers should think about the accessibility of each unit for a field engineer without disassembling the entire product. Documentation writers should not reduce the text to a minimum. Applicators should tell doctors more about the advantages of software options. And doctors and medical personnel should read the operating manuals.
